Ian Spanier began taking photographs at age six when his parents gave him his first point-and-shoot camera. After majoring in photography in college, he worked in publishing as an editor, but making pictures never left him. Having only known 35mm, he taught himself medium and large format as well as lighting.
Ian's first full book of published work, "Playboy, a Guide to Cigars", arrived in cigar shops in November 2009 and in retail stores in spring 2010. The book is a collection of his photographs made in six countries, spanning two-and-a-half years. His newest book project, "Local Heroes: America's Volunteer Fire Fighters," came out to critical acclaim in fall 2012.
The original masters of photography have always inspired Ian as they shot what they saw. For him, there is no "one" subject that he photographs; he also chooses to shoot what he sees.
Ian lives with his wife and two sons in Los Angeles, California.
"I've found that no matter what situation I am presented with, there's a Lowepro bag that helps me not only get my equipment to the shoot, but also get the job done. I've even come to using my bags to carry my portfolios to meetings, as they are so much more comfortable than traditional portfolio cases. In each scenario, there's a bag, accessory or system that solves the challenges I face, leaving me with one less thing to worry about."
