FRAMING THE WORLD RESPONSIBLY

A Photographer's Guide to Sustainable Practices

WITH KRISZTIAN TOTH

Hey there, fellow creatives and eco-warriors!

My name is Krisz, and I am a 26-year-old freelance photographer with a passion for capturing the world’s beauty in the most sustainable way possible. My goal is to ensure that my creative pursuits do not contribute to nature’s downfall. That is why I started my photography business grounded in sustainable values.

In this guide, you can explore the benefits of using public transportation, the advantages of renewable energy sources, and the importance of choosing the right equipment. These tips will not only help you reduce your environmental impact but also enhance your creativity and connection with the world around you.

Before jumping in, I want to be upfront with you: my business is not 100% sustainable…yet. Like many of us, I’m constantly learning and striving to improve. Every day presents new chances to make more conscious choices, and I am committed to doing my best to work towards a fully sustainable photography business.

Now, let’s see how you can start sustainable photography!

Tip #1 | Embrace Public Transportation

First up, getting to your photoshoots. I live in an urban area and have access to a decent public transport system, making it my go-to mode of travel. Not only does it reduce my carbon footprint, but it also gives me a chance to better observe my surroundings and find unexpected photo opportunities along the way.

Plus, there is the poetic vibe of watching the world go by from a bus window, camera in hand, ready to capture the moment. It is these ‘frozen’ moments that make sustainable photography so appealing. And if public transport is not an option, I would consider sharing a ride with other creatives or cycling to my next shoot if it is nearby.

Tip #2 | Power Up Sustainably

Camera equipment can be quite the energy hog, and making sure my gear is always charged is a must. It is always easy to plug-in the wall. But is it sustainable, I started asking myself. The answer is, no. So I have invested in portable solar chargers and battery packs to keep my gear topped up. These handy devices allow me to charge my gear on the go, using better energy resources.

Last summer, I took a week-long hiking trip in Sweden, and my solar charger was a game-changer. It kept my gear juiced up the entire time, all without having access to a traditional plug. It’s amazing how much cleaner and more connected to nature you feel when you’re literally harvesting the sun to fuel your creativity.

Tip #3 | Choose Eco-Friendly Gear

When it is time for upgrading or getting new equipment, I always try to consider the environmental impact of my choices. Looking for companies that prioritize sustainability in their manufacturing, and brands that are offering gear made from recycled materials or with a reduced carbon footprint.

For example, after getting more and more gear I have quickly grown out my first camera bag, and luckily Lowepro has just come out with their bags, made with recycled fabrics featuring their Green Line bar, which made my next purchase aligned with my own values. And my old bag became a great second-hand gift to another photographer friend.

Additionally, I’ve found that having built-to-last and fit-for-purpose gear, like the Protactic II , accelerates my creativity while ensuring the highest quality of my sustainable photography.

Tip #4 | Print with Purpose

Printing photos can be one of the least eco-friendly aspects of photography, but it does not have to be. Choose services that offer sustainable printing options, such as recycled paper or soy-based inks. Better yet, limiting prints to those truly special shots that deserve to be displayed, can help reduce waste and excess carbon emissions.

While printing remains an environmental challenge, new innovations hit the creative field daily, so keep looking.

Tip #5 | Live a Sustainable Lifestyle

Lastly, one of the best ways to amplify the impact of your efforts is to broaden beyond photography. As a freelance photographer I consider my profession my lifestyle, and I am sure many of you do as well. Embracing a sustainable lifestyle in all aspects of my life can truly ensure that my photography and creative services are environmentally friendly.

Sharing my journey towards a greener lifestyle has motivated others to take similar steps, and I hope that through this guide you now have an idea where to start. Let’s keep the planet as beautiful as the photographs we capture!
