Wildlife Photography in Extreme Conditions

with the ProTrekker 650 AW II

A Passion Rooted in Nature

My passion for wildlife photography started very early, first through underwater photography. I have always felt a strong connection with nature, especially the sea, and spending time immersed in the marine world shaped the way I observe and document wildlife. Over time, that same curiosity naturally extended above the surface and wildlife photography became a defining part of my journey.

I am often drawn to large predators, but what truly fascinates me are those animals that are harder to find and observe. Capturing a moment or a behavior I have studied and waited for, even if only briefly, is always an exciting and deeply rewarding experience.

Preparing for the Expedition

When planning this expedition, I knew I needed a backpack I could truly rely on. Long days in the field, challenging terrain, and heavy equipment demand a solution that combines capacity, protection, and comfort. Working with super telephoto lenses means bulky gear, so space and smart organization were essential, but I also wanted something compact and easy to carry.

The ProTrekker 650 AW II quickly stood out. It offers generous internal space while maintaining a clean, ergonomic design. I work very close to nature, often placing my backpack on wet ground, mud, or rocks, so knowing that my equipment and laptop are always protected gives me real peace of mind. It strikes a great balance between durability, protection, and practicality in the field.

Working in Challenging Environments

This trip took me to Scotland, where I focused on photographing puffins along coastal cliffs. Weather conditions were constantly changing, with frequent rain, strong winds, and high humidity throughout most shooting days.

In these conditions, the ProTrekker 650 AW II proved to be extremely reliable. From wet forests to boat trips with seawater splashing over the backpack, it handled everything without issue. What I appreciated most was how solid yet manageable it felt. Even when carrying everything I needed for several days, it remained comfortable and easy to work with.

Equipment Setup

For this expedition, my kit included a Canon R5, a Canon 1DX Mark III, and a range of lenses from wide angle to super telephoto. The Canon 400 mm f2.8 EF was the most demanding in terms of size, but it fit securely inside the backpack with excellent protection.

Alongside my camera gear, I carried technical clothing for rain and wind, a Gitzo Systematic tripod with a gimbal head, ND filters for wide angle photography, and a DJI Mavic Pro mounted externally. The internal layout made it easy to organize everything and access my gear quickly when the moment mattered.

Comfort and Ergonomics in the Field

During long treks and extended shooting sessions, the backpack remained consistently comfortable. Its semi rigid structure kept the load stable and close to my back, while the wide shoulder straps helped distribute the weight evenly throughout the day.

The lumbar support and chest strap reduced pressure on my shoulders and made a noticeable difference during longer outings. What really stands out, though, is the backpack’s compact shape. Even when fully packed, it feels balanced and natural to carry.

A Reliable Tool for Wildlife Photography

One of the ProTrekker 650 AW II’s strongest qualities is its resistance.

Being able to place the backpack on any surface, without worrying about damage, allows me to stay focused on shooting. Combined with excellent internal protection, it gives me the confidence I need when working in unpredictable environments.

For photographers who spend long days outdoors and face challenging conditions, this backpack is a dependable companion that supports both creativity and efficiency in the field.
