THE LEAP OF FISH THAT DREAM FLYING

Isabella Franceschini's latest project, 'The Leap of Fish That Dream of Flying,' has gained significant recognition as a finalist for the 2023 ISPA and a mention at the 2024 ZEKE Awards for Systemic Change. Additionally, she has been offered to becoming a Lowepro Ambassador. 

The Italian Sustainability Photo Awards – ISPA was established in 2019 to address the increasing need for amplified awareness of environmental, social, and governance sustainability. Since 2022, Lowepro has been ISPA's technical partner.

Isabella Franceschini's project, set against the backdrop of the Po Delta, a UNESCO MaB Reserve since 2015, beautifully captures the intricate interplay of natural, industrial, and agricultural landscapes shaped by centuries of human activity.

THE PROJECT: THE LEAP OF FISH 

The Po Delta is known for its unique combination of natural, industrial, and agricultural landscapes, which have been shaped by centuries of human activity. The complex relationship between the river, land, sea, and climate had a significant impact on the social and economic aspects of human communities, as they strive to adapt to the ever-changing ecosystem. The Po Delta, which has been a UNESCO MaB (Man and the Biosphere) Reserve since 2015, is currently undergoing a transformation, with the industrial site of the Polesine Camerini power plant being converted into an innovative and environmentally sustainable tourist hotspot. This redevelopment project spans 300 hectares, with one portion dedicated to woodland and another to accommodation facilities. This initiative is part of the Futur-e project, led by Enel Group, which aims to repurpose 23 disused industrial sites and a former mining area that are no longer needed for energy production.

Between 2021 and 2023, my work documents the economic and social structure of this fragile area, historically threatened by hydraulic dangers such as floods and subsidence, further intensified by sudden climate changes. The revitalization of the area creates opportunities from both an environmental perspective, promoting the protection and care of wetlands ecosystem, and from a social perspective, supporting equitable growth in vulnerable areas and among specific population segments. We are currently experiencing a historical period of profound transformation that urges us to reconsider our way of life, placing increasing emphasis on renewable energies and prioritizing pathways towards a zero-emission energy system.
