Fabio Bucciarelli is an internationally renowned Italian photographer and journalist, recognized for his commitment to documenting conflicts, the climate emergency, and the resulting humanitarian crises. His reportages have garnered prestigious accolades in the world of photography, including the Robert Capa Gold Medal, ten Pictures of The Year International awards, the Visa d'Or News, and two World Press Photo awards, among others. Currently, Bucciarelli collaborates with Die Zeit, La Repubblica, The New York Times, and other editorial outlets, television platforms, and various non-governmental organizations. His photographs are showcased in museums and galleries worldwide. In addition to his role as a photojournalist, he contributes articles to various Italian newspapers and serves as a curator and artistic director. Fabio Bucciarelli is a Canon Ambassador.

In the heart of Africa lies South Sudan, the world's youngest country, marked by politico-ethnic violence and chronic instability since gaining independence from Sudan in 2011. The country has been grappling with massive floods for the fourth consecutive year, reaching its peak in 2022.
Since 2019, South Sudan has faced unprecedented rain seasons, submerging vast areas and causing widespread destruction that displaced hundreds of thousands of people. This multi-year inundation, unseen in more than six decades, has impacted two-thirds of the country. According to UNHCR, nearly one million people have been directly affected, forced to flee their homes in search of food and shelter. Up to 7.8 million people face severe hunger in 2023 due to floods, drought, and conflict.
The root causes of this crisis are a complex interplay of climate change consequences, including higher rainfall, deforestation in neighboring countries, population growth, and poor water management. The rise in the White Nile River has pushed more water into the Sudd, one of Africa's largest floodplains. The water no longer drains away during the dry season, leaving devastation in its wake - destroyed homes, properties, crops, livestock, schools, healthcare centers, and critical infrastructural damage to roads and bridges.
South Sudan, already highly vulnerable, is now teetering on the brink of collapse due to the compounding effects of the climate crisis.

They enable us, perhaps, to avoid making the same mistakes of the past or at least to refrain from saying, "We didn't know.”
